How to play
Mahjong Solitaire II is the sequel to original Arkadium hit game Mahjong Solitaire. It features a brand new look, along with new features and modes that provide a great new game experience with a familiar, comfortable feel.
To start off, instead of one main mode, Mahjong Solitaire II features two entirely new modes for you to choose from. Zen Mode and Daily Challenge. Both of these have been highly requested by our players over the years, and we are very happy to present them at last.
Zen Mode is the classic Mahjong Solitaire that you know and love, with a welcome twist: There's no timer. Zen Mode allows you to play Mahjong Solitaire while taking your time, as long as you like to make careful strategic tile decisions to your enjoyment.
You can choose between several different layouts before beginning the game. Each layout will have your highest respective score beside it. The three lower layouts will require being logged into a Free Arkadium Account to be accessed.
Once you choose a layout, you'll be greeted with the familiar Mahjongg Solitaire game screen. The game is played like any of our current Mahjong titles.
Mahjongg Solitaire is a solitaire matching game that uses a set of Mahjong tiles. The 144 tiles are arranged in special layouts with their faces upward. Players can only match pairs of tiles where each tile has at least one side (left or right) free and no other tiles placed on top. Matching tile pairs can be removed by clicking on each tile in the pair.
You will be able to see the game details on top. How many Open Matches you currently have, your current Score and how many Tiles are still in play.
The icon on the left will open the game's menu.
In the Pause menu, you can switch the game sound on and off, Exit the game and quit the match, and click on the X icon on the right to get back to the game.
You can click the question mark icon to open the help section.
The help section will tell you how to play the game and show you the game's scoring method.
Goal. The goal of the game is to clear the layout by pairing up all the tiles. Solving a Mahjong Solitaire board puzzle is all about avoiding a situation where there are no matches left. There is always at least one valid solution for the board.
A player can only remove the tiles one pair at a time. There are a total of 72 pairs in a game of Mahjongg Solitaire. Like cards, the tiles have standard suits. These suits are Wans, Circles, Bamboos, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Seasons.
You can also find this image of them in the game menu:
Matching of tiles. Exposed pairs of identical tiles are removed from the layout one at a time, gradually exposing lower layers to play.
NOTE: Seasons and Flowers are the only suits you do not need to match exactly. Any Season or Flower combination counts as a pair because there is only one of each tile
If you're unable to find a match, click on the Hint icon. This will highlight two tiles that can be matched.
If you have no more matches to choose from, it doesn't mean the game is over. Unlike the traditional Mahjong Solitaire, this game allows you to shuffle the tiles once no more matches appear, by watching an ad. You can also choose Give Up to stop playing.
NOTE: Subscribers will be able to skip the ads
At the end of the game, you'll be able to see your score results in the final screen.
Now, let's take a look at the brand new Daily Challenge. A way to have a brand new game each day. You'll be able to pick a brand new Mahjongg Solitaire game each day, and always with a specific solution. In this way, each game is a specific puzzle that is always shuffled in the same manner.
As you finish the daily challenges, you'll be able to unlock trophies along the month. Each month carries brand new challenges.
For each challenge, you have 3 different attempts to solve it. Your high score will be noted on top. You can shuffle the tiles once, but should you run out of matches after that, the game will end. Only 3 attempts are granted per daily challenge puzzle. You'll also have 10 minutes to solve the challenge.
Tips
General strategy. The general strategy is to keep removing matching tiles so that each removal opens more possibilities for future tile matching.
NOTE: if you have a pair that does not open any way to other tiles, leave it until you need it
As you can see in the example below, removing the top tile opened 2 more matches. That is extremely useful! This made it so you have two extra tiles to use for other matches.
Don't forget that you should open new tiles with every matched pair. Choosing obvious pairs every time, such as those from the top levels, will often result in a loss by leaving more tiles uncovered.
Horizontal lines. In certain situations, obtaining matching tiles can be either impossible or highly unlikely. The key is to avoid getting into positions where this is likely to happen. Concentrate on matching tiles on horizontal lines, as these are usually more difficult to remove.
3 identical tiles. When you have 3 or more identical tiles free and matchable, match the pair that will free additional tiles. Matching the wrong pair can lead to unsolvable situations later.
Plan ahead. It is imperative to react fast. A fast reaction means making the correct decision given the current situation as the result of previous decisions. You will be required to imagine your movements several steps ahead. The game might look playable now, but if you don’t look ahead and you make the wrong move, then the game could end with no solutions.
Use your memory. Some of the Mahjong characters on the tiles look quite similar, especially when you must quickly scan many tiles over and over. It is important to be able to distinguish all the tiles correctly and memorize where you last saw a certain piece.
All these tips may look intimidating the first time you play Mahjong solitaire, but don’t worry! This game is easy to learn but challenging to master. You will learn everything eventually, leading to fewer unsolvable situations after each successful game.
Scoring
General Formula:
Final Score = Score for each suit * 2 * Chain Multiplier * Remaining Tiles Multiplier + Bonus Score.
NOTE: using the hint button doesn't affect the score
Chain Multiplier = 1. Increases when you match the same suit in a row.
Remaining Tiles Multiplier = Number of remaining tiles on the board
Bonus Score (percentages) = Number of Pairs Matched * 2 * 144.
Each suite is worth a different value:
Suite | Points per tile | Points per match |
WAN | 1 | 2 |
CIRCLE | 2 | 4 |
BAMBOO | 3 | 6 |
WIND | 4 | 8 |
DRAGON | 5 | 10 |
FLOWER | 6 | 12 |
SEASON | 7 | 14 |
